SCR Independent Overview Authors

In his letter of 19 February 2008, addressing all directors of children's services in England and all chairs of LSCBs, The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children, Young People and Families, Kevin Brennan MP, said: "...I would like us, together, to identify the qualities of a good overview report author, clarify our understanding of what being independent means, and look at ways to help LSCBs find the right people to undertake this important task."

The Department for Children, Schools and Families are currently taking this work forward with Government Offices and Local Safeguarding Children Boards by:

  • Collecting and developing examples of good practice in undertaking SCRs, particularly with regard to the roles, responsibilities and independence of overview authors

  • Establishing regional lists of overview authors

  • Considering further the need for tailor-made training and the form it would take

Working together

As part of the development process, we are keen to share ideas and learning, and gather examples of good practice.

If you have any ideas to feed into this work, please email Matthew Pearce. If you have examples of good practice to offer, complete and send this template.
