Healthy Care

Healthy Care is a national programme developed by the National Children's Bureau (NCB) and funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, which aims to promote a healthy care environment where looked-after children and young people:

  • Experience a genuinely caring, supportive, stable and secure relationship with at least one committed, trained, experienced and supported carer

  • Live in an environment that promotes health and wellbeing within the wider community

  • Have opportunities to develop personal and social skills to care for their health and wellbeing now and in the future

  • Receive effective healthcare, assessment, treatment and support

It provides a multi-agency framework for local partnerships to achieve the five outcomes for children set out in Every Child Matters.

What does the Healthy Care programme do?

It provides a national standard that reflects best operational practice and offers a set of tools and resources for local organisations to:

  • Audit local services
  • Develop action plans
  • Involve children, young people and their carers
  • Evidence progress and provide information for inspection
  • Develop training programmes for carers
  • Strengthen national and regional support networks
